The Salvation Army is a charitable organisation that has around 1.5 million members, mainly consisting of soldiers and officers. It was founded by Catherine and William Booth who sought to bring relief to the destitute and the poor. The organisation has since grown massively since it was founded in 1865 and is now present in 127 countries. The charity operates homeless shelters, provides disaster relief and humanitarian aid as well as running many charity shops throughout the UK. The Salvation Army has a military structure which was first introduced in 1868 by William Booth himself and it has kept it to today. General Andre Cox is the current leader of the Salvation Army and was elected in August 2013.
