About Lidl – 0843 218 4776

Lidl was first founded in 1930 by the Schwarz family. Since then, Lidl has gone on to establish itself in over 20 countries in Europe. Lidl was originally a fruit wholesaler, before becoming a general food wholesaler until it was destroyed by war in 1944. The first discount store opened in 1973, copying the fellow discount chain Aldi. By 1977, the chain had around 33 stores.

Lidl launched in the UK in 1994, growing on a consistent basis to over 590 stores. It has a share of the grocery market which is less than 5%, but is popular with consumers due to its budget nature.
