About Card Factory

Dean Hoyle, the founder of the Card Factory, left school at sixteen years old without a single qualification to his name, being, in his own words “far, far more interested in football.” He took his first foray into selling cards with his entrepreneurial and business-savvy wife Janet, beginning in 1993 by buying greetings cards wholesale and selling them from the back of his van at car boot sales and public open-air events where he could park up and get to work.

By 1997, the enterprising couple had opened their first physical storefront, under the watchful eye of their holding company Sportswift Ltd. They deliberately and shrewdly chose secondary retail locations over the more desirable and hotly contested primary retail locations – a decision made because it was cheaper and more in line with their business model. After successfully spreading to a number of physical locations, the couple specialised within their company in order to fully play to their strengths. Janet founded and chaired Card Factory’s internal design board and printing department, while Dean focused all his efforts on expanding their new business, setting himself to target 500 stores as his ultimate goal. This separation of duties and focus on cheaper retail locations gave Card Factory an immediate price advantage over its closest rivals, such as Hallmark and Clintons, allowing them to take progressively slimmer profit margins and keep their prices the same for over ten years, while their rivals are forced to increase their prices.

After their initial successes, the couple built a board of directors to help with their expansion, including Keith Pacey, the Chairman of Maplin, Richard Hayes, the Managing Director of Card Factory, Chris Beck, their Commercial Director, previously of Grant Thornton, and Darren Bryant, their Finance Director, previously of Price-Waterhouse-Coopers.

On November 28th, 2008, Card Factory continued its aggressive expansion with the assimilation of 80 stores from the failed greetings card rival Celebrations Group, which traded as two stores – Card Warehouse and Cardfair. However, this was not a strike against Celebrations Group – it was, in fact, a rescue package, and the buy-over saved over 500 jobs.

Dean and Janet Hoyle put their company up for sale in January of 2010, and on 8th April of the same year Charterhouse completed the £350 million purchase. With the money raised from selling Card Factory, Dean Hoyle later bought Huddersfield Town F.C.

Card Factory went on to buy gettingpersonal.co.uk for an undisclosed amount of money, and was floated on the London Stock Exchange for the first time in May 2014.

The Card Factory Jobs

The Card Factory currently employs around 6,500 people, mostly as front-of-house staff in their stores. However, they also employ artists and designers for their cards, stylists, writers and photographers, who help to put the end product together, and developed marketing teams, corporate managers, financial managers and accountants, customer service staff and public relations employees.

In addition to this are the warehouse staff, logistics coordinators, drivers and heavy plant operators, and the retail staff and managers of the actual stores.
