British Home Stores, commonly abbreviated to BHS, was a British department store chain, whose branches were mainly found on high streets or in shopping centres. The company was founded in 1928 by a group of US entrepreneurs in Brixton, London.
BHS mainly sold clothing and household items but began to extend into furniture, electronics, entertainment, convenience groceries and fragrance and beauty products. Sir Philip Green bought the company in 2000 and took it private, becoming part of Green’s Arcadia Group in 2009.
In March 2015 BHS was sold to consortium Retail Acquisitions Ltd for a nominal fee of £1. In April 2016, it was confirmed that BHS had entered administration after a failure of obtaining safeguarding funds of £60 million. The company had 164 stores throughout the United Kingdom at this point, and 74 international stores spread across 18 separate territories.
On 2 June 2016, it was announced that after failing to find a buyer, the company would be wound down. The company’s website, bhs.co.uk, was closed in July 2016, with all stores closed by August.
The overseas franchise and digital businesses were sold to the Al Mana Group during administration, who launched a new website under bhs.com under the new brand name ‘The British Home Store’ in September 2016. In December 2016, the remainder of the business went into liquidation.

Closure Information – 0844 249 0807
By early 2016 BHS had begun to withdraw from multiple city centres due to several store closures after it was revealed in January 2015 that Sir Philip Green was considering selling the company after it had sustained serious losses. In March 2016 the company applied for a company voluntary arrangement (CVA), which revealed a severe deficit in its pension scheme of £207 million, and in April the owner of Retail Acquisitions announced that administrators would be appointed to the company on 25 April 2016. On 23 July 2016 twenty stores were shut down, with another thirty following the week after. All BHS’s final outlets were closed by 28 August 2016, and the website as bhs.co.uk closed on 25 July 2016. The insolvent part of the company went into liquidation in December 2016. The Qatari Al Mana Group bought the company’s international franchise stores and online operations in June 2016, and formed a new business as BHS International (UK) Limited and launched bhs.com under the new brand name The British Home Store in September 2016. this remains as the company’s sole existence in the UK.
